Freshman Kelly Martin scored two goals, added two assists, and had three draw controls as the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Lacrosse team stunned 2006 Skyline Conference finalist Manhattanville College, 14-8 on Wednesday night at Columbia University. The win improved the Dolphins to 3-4, 2-0 in Skyline Conference play, and marked the Mount's first-ever win over Manhattanville in Women's Lacrosse. |
Wednesday night was about the Mount Saint Vincent veterans as juniors Cyndi Adams (Mechanicsville, MD/Chopticon HS), Maureen Payne (Bloomfield Hills, MI/Marian), and Chanel Comis (Durham, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) combined for an incredible 10 goals and two assists, with Payne enjoying a dominant evening at center. The trio registered all of the team's points during a game-opening 6-0 run that saw the Mount all but put the game away. Adams scored at 27:53 and then again at 27:12 to make it 2-0. Comis tallied her first goal at 25:32 to extend the lead to three. Payne scored at 24:23 and Adams made it 5-0 less than 10 minutes into the game. Payne notched her second goal at 14:03 to extend the lead to six. After Manhattanville's Katie Bertel scored at 10:21 to make it a 6-1 game, Payne found Adams for a spectacular goal at 7:41 to bring the lead back to six. Freshman Kelly Martin (North Rockland, NY/North Rockland HS) capped the first half scoring with 3:21 to play to give the Mount an 8-1 lead at halftime.
Manhattanville made a run to open the second half, scoring three times in a row to make it 8-4. After Payne and freshman Khrystina Jackson (West Islip, NY/West Islip HS) scored two minutes apart to make it 10-4, Manhattanville scored three straight to make it 10-7 and make a game out of it. However, the Mount scored four of the game's final five goals to cap with arguably the biggest win in the history of the program.
Adams finished with five goals, while Payne added three goals, two assists, and four draw controls. Comis scored twice, and Martin added two goals and two assists. Mount Saint Vincent also received an outstanding defensive effort from juniors Michelle Yarger (Chantilly, VA/Chantilly HS) and Alexis Alessi (Oceanside, NY/Oceanside HS), while freshman Jackie Horn (Setauket, NY/Ward Melville HS) stopped 14 out of 22 shots before being relieved by fellow freshman Nicole Fortier (East Lyme, CT/East Lyme HS), who stopped both shots she faced during the final 11 minutes of play.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Tuesday, April 10 when they host two-time defending National Champions the College of New Jersey at 6:00 p.m. at Wien Stadium of Columbia University.
