Men's Tennis drops 5-4 heartbreaker to Maritime College in 'Battle of the Bronx'
Cangiano has stellar day in both singles and doubles play; Cook, Maurer win at singles; Dolphins host Mount Saint Mary on Wednesday
4/2/2007 - (Riverdale, NY) - Exactly 1,800 days since their last Skyline Conference victory, the Mount Saint Vincent Men's Tennis team came so incredibly close to breaking their string of conference defeats that they could taste it on Monday afternoon. After Maritime College won two out of three doubles matches, the Mount rallied to capture three of the first five singles matches to tie the score at four. With Mount Saint Vincent's Tristan Franz (Brooklyn, NY/Xavier) and Maritime's Al Said battling at fifth singles, all eyes were on the final match of the day to determine the victor. Ultimately, it was Maritime's Said who scored an 8-2 win, to give the Privateers a 5-4 victory. But in their second season back at the varsity level, and only days after beginning the 2007 season in earnest, it is clear that the '07 version of the Dolphins is truly heading in the right direction.

Doubles play saw Maritime win easily in the top two spots, but Mount Saint Vincent received a glimmer of hope in the form of Franz and junior Vincent Cangiano (Green Brook, NJ/Watchung Hills HS), who dominated in third doubles, 8-1. The win set up a great Dolphin run in singles play as Cangiano was victorious in fourth singles, 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-6), and Garrett Cooke (Wickford, RI/Bishop Hendricken) and Mike Maurer (Hampton, NH/Winnaconnet HS) won third and sixth singles, 9-7, and 6-1, 6-2, respectively. The wins off-set close losses by junior Arnold Ross (Wilton, ME/Mount Blue HS) and sophomore Joe Nickerson (Summit, NJ/Hudson Catholic) in the top two singles spots. However, the Mount fell one win short of a team victory.

With two matches of solid tennis behind them, Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Wednesday, April 4 when they host Skyline Conference foe Mount Saint Mary at 4:00 p.m.
