Softball pounds Medgar Evers 28-3 in HVWAC opener
Three Dolphins hit home runs, Piccoli scores five times as Dolphins improve to 2-1; host St. Joseph's (LI) on Saturday
3/29/2007 - (Brooklyn, NY) - If anybody wondered whether or not the Mount Saint Vincent Softball team would be ready for the rigors of Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) play for the 2007 season, all questions were answered on Thursday afternoon. Mere minutes after the start of their conference match-up with Medgar Evers, the Mount led 8-0 ... and that was only the beginning. Four innings later, the Mount completed a 28-3 pounding of the Cougars that not only improved the Dolphins to 2-1, but it also sent a message that this season's HVWAC Championship team will have to overcome a very good Mount Saint Vincent squad to get there, if it is not Mount Saint Vincent to win it.

While Tuesday's doubleheader split with Lehman College featured an outstanding array of pitching and defense, Thursday's game put the Mount's offensive firepower on full display. The Mount simply crushed the ball, scoring eight times during the first inning, 10 more times during the second inning, four runs during the third inning, and three runs apiece during the fourth and fifth innings for the highest Dolphin scoring output in more than three years. Senior Jessica Piccoli (Yonkers, NY/Saunders HS) scored five runs alone, and the Mount hit three home runs en route to victory after hitting a combined two home runs during the entire 2006 season.

Sophomore Jillian Troncoso (West Haverstraw, NY/North Rockland HS) connected on her first home run of the season, a first inning grand slam that put the Mount ahead 5-0. Two innings later, freshman Lisa O'Shea (White Plains, NY/Our Lady of Victory) hit a three-run blast that extended the lead to 21-0. Piccoli followed in the fourthinning with a solo shot that made it 23-2. Overall, every player in the Mount Saint Vincent line-up scored at least one run.

On the mound, freshman Meagan Gonzalez (Fishers, IN/Hamilton South Eastern HS) earned her second win, allowing three runs during an outstanding complete game effort.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, March 31 when they host 2006 Skyline Conference Champion St. Joseph's (LI) at 12:00 for a doubleheader. The games will be played at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, NY.
