Egan's 21 saves, Reynold's hat-trick not enough as Men's Lacrosse falls 12-4 to Privateers during Skyline Conference opener
Dolphins show tremendous improvement during first-ever conference match-up; travel to Briarcliffe on Saturday
3/7/2007 - (Throggs Neck, NY) - If the reading on a scoreboard is the measure of success, the first-ever Skyline Conference Men's Lacrosse game for Mount Saint Vincent proved to be a difficult task on Wednesday night as the Dolphins lost to Maritime College, 12-4. But if success is measured by determination, hustle, and improvement from one game to the next, Wednesday evening was nothing short of a major positive for the Mount as they rebounded from a disappointing effort during a 12-1 loss to Shenandoah University on Saturday with a respectable performance against a very good Maritime College team. The Mount hustled, played aggressive defense, and received tremendous performances from juniors Jason Reynolds (Centereach, NY/Middle Country HS) and Tom Egan (Nyack, NY/Nyack HS), who individually did all they could to keep the game close. And for a while, the plan worked as the Mount hung tough with Maritime for much of the game.

Maritime (2-0, 1-0 Skyline Conference) scored the game's first five goals as they dominated much of the first half, outshooting the Mount 32-9 during the stretch after winning six of the game's first eight face-offs. However, Egan's tremendous performance in goal kept things close. The junior made 11 of his game-high 21 saves during the first half, most of which were from point-blank range. And when Reynolds scored the first of his three goals late in the first half, the score was 5-1 and Mount Saint Vincent had a fighting chance.

Maritime scored the next three goals to make it 8-1 late in the third quarter, but the Privateers were never able to completely pull away. Egan was perhaps the game's best player, turning in one of the best performances of his career. Reynolds scored late in both the third and fourth quarters for his first hat-trick of the season, and junior Stan Wong (Merrick, NY/Calhoun HS) had two assists. Overall, Maritime owned a commanding 66-18 edge in shots, and had 51 ground balls compared to the Mount's 31, but the game was a competitive one throughout.

With their first conference game behind them and marked improvement to celebrate, Mount Saint Vincent will now seek their first win of the 2007 season on Saturday, March 10 when they travel to Briarcliffe College at 1:00 p.m.
