The Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship Program
The Noyce Grant began in January 2014 and will serve biology, chemistry, and math majors who are pursuing initial New York State certification in adolescent education (seventh grade through high school in math and science).
The Noyce Scholarship
Selected students will receive up to $16,000 per year for two years to complete their bachelor's degree and earn initial New York State certification.
Noyce Scholars will be paired with a mentor, currently working as an in-service teacher, who will provide pedagogical ideas and support for learning the culture of the particular public school.
K-12 math and science teachers-in-residence will showcase best teaching practices in workshops open to all Teacher Education students.
- Current GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale
- U.S. citizen or national or permanent resident alien
- Junior or senior majoring in mathematics or science
- Completed at least 75% of the semester credit hours attempted in the most recent academic year
- Enrolled full-time
- Submission of a statement of purpose and interest (response to essay prompts)
- Completed Undergraduate Noyce Scholarship application and recommendation
- A completed FAFSA
- Interview with the Noyce Grant principal investigators
- Period of service in a high-needs school after degree completion
The Noyce Grant will also facilitate a paid summer internship program exploring the teaching profession for 25 freshman and sophomore students, over five years. Interns will work at local environmental education centers, such as:
- Groundworks Hudson Valley Science Barge, a prototype sustainable urban farm floating on the Hudson River in Yonkers, NY. There, interns will teach school students about the benefits of hydroponic agriculture and vertical agriculture in urban areas
- New York Botanical Garden
- The Bronx Zoo
- Summer camps with academic components where interns will tutor students
During the course of five years, the Robert Noyce Teacher Scholarship program will achieve the following objectives:
- Develop two new components of STEM/Teacher Education program at the College: Summer courses and a new four-year pathway for transfer students.
- Implement targeted recruitment strategies for the STEM/Adolescent Education Certification.
- Increase the number of undergraduate science or math majors pursuing a teaching career.
- Provide scholarships to qualified undergraduate science majors.
- Provide support to scholarship recipients that will enable students to persist and complete the program leading to certification.
- Increase the proportion of the College’s STEM population who enters and completes the teacher certification program during the five-year grant period.
- Provide teaching support to all scholarship recipients who complete the certification.
