Junior Corey Petruccelli came off of the bench to net career highs in both points (10), and rebounds (8). His outstanding effort allowed Mount Saint Vincent to hold off a pesky Green Mountain College squad and rally for a 70-49 win on Thursday night during a game played at Mount Saint Vincent. The win was the Mount's second during the last four games and improved their record to 3-19 heading into Saturday's trip to St. Joseph's (LI). |
A pesky defensive effort by Green Mountain (2-18) kept things close for much of the first half, and when sophomore Jamie Kennedy (Millbrook, NY/Milbrook HS) hit a jumper with 7:40 remaining in the first half, the score was tied at 14. However, a 14-3 Dolphin run put the Mount ahead for good, and the Dolphins led 28-20 at halftime. Mount Saint Vincent owned a 21-16 first half rebounding advantage, but the score remained close because the Mount shot only 40% during the first 20 minutes. That would change in a hurry.
After the Dolphins opened up the second half with a run that put them up by 12 points, Green Mountain made another charge and with 14:41 remaining the game, Mount Saint Vincent clung to a 34-32 lead. That was the last time the Eagles would make things competitive as an 11-0 Dolphin run essentially put the game away with just over 10 minutes to play. That run was followed up with a 16-2 outburst during the final eight minutes to put the game completely out of reach as Mount Saint Vincent shot 62% during the second half and 50% for the game. The Dolphins also finished with a 41-30 rebounding edge.
Freshman Kevin Garlan (Jackson Heights, NY/Archbishop Molloy) turned in one of his finest performances of the season as he scored a game-high 17 points and added five rebounds, four assists, and three steals. But his impact was dwarfed by an incredible display by junior Corey Petruccelli (Stratford, CT/St. Joseph's - Trumbull), as Petruccelli came off of the bench to score a season-high 10 points and grab a season-high eight rebounds, all of which came when the game was close. Also having big nights for the Mount were sophomore Tim Biolsi (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman), who scored 13 points and dished out three assists, and freshman Lester Owens (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan HS) scored eight points. Nine different Dolphins scored at least two points apiece.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 10 when they travel to St. Joseph's (LI) for a 4:30 p.m. Skyline Conference game.
