Mount Saint Vincent (2-19, 1-12 Skyline Conference) came out smoking, embarking on a 14-3 run during the game's first 4:26. Five minutes later, the Dolphins still led by as many as nine, but a 10-0 Stevens run put the Ducks in the lead, but thanks to the pesky Mount Saint Vincent defense, the game remained close throughout the first 20 minutes. And when junior Derek Charlton (Yonkers, NY/St. Raymond's) converted a lay-up with 44 seconds remaining in the first half, Mount Saint Vincent led 41-35 en route to a 41-37 halftime lead. During the first half, the Mount shot 47%, compared the Stevens' 41%, and the Dolphins also outrebounded the Ducks, 20-19.
The second half proved to be a different story as Stevens went on the offensive, and the Mount was able to hang on for much of the second stanza, but ultimately the Ducks proved to be too much. A Tim Biolsi (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) three-pointer with 14:47 remaining in the game gave the Mount a 54-45 lead and Mount Saint Vincent appeared headed towards one of the biggest upsets of the 2006-07 season. However, a 12-2 Stevens run put the Ducks ahead once again. Another Biolsi three-pointer with 7:45 remaining tied the score at 63, but that was the last time the game would be tied. A 16-3 Stevens run during a 2:25 span put the Ducks ahead 79-66, and Stevens cruised from there. While most of the second half was close, Stevens (18-4, 11-2 Skyline Conference) dominated statistically, shooting 65% from the floor (20 for 31), and enjoying a 29-13 rebounding edge during the final 20 minutes. Four Ducks scored in double figures, as sophomore Virgil Gray II (Elmwood Park, NJ/Bergen Catholic) scored a game-high 24 points, while junior Waleed Farid (Woodside, NY/Stuyvesant) scored 21 points, 19 of which came during the second half.
For Mount Saint Vincent, Charlton notched his eighth double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds, and he added six assists and five steals during an incredible all-around. Biolsi scored a team-high 22 points, while freshman Kevin Garlan (Jackson Heights, NY/Archbishop Molloy) added 12 points. Mount Saint Vincent forced an incredible 27 Stevens turnovers while turning the ball over 22 times, accounting for much of the reason why the game was so close.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 8 when they host Green Mountain College at 7:00 p.m.
