Junior Derek Charlton notched his sixth double-double of the 2006-07 season with 17 points and 12 rebounds, and he added five assists and five steals, but the Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team lost 87-72 to Old Westbury on Saturday afternoon. The Mount travels to Centenary on Thursday at 6:00 p.m. |
The young Dolphin team played solid all-around basketball despite the 15-point loss as it took an incredible shooting effort by Old Westbury (11-6, 7-2 Skyline Conference) during the second half for the Panthers to pull away after the Mount trailed 35-28 at halftime. Old Westbury shot 64% (16 for 25) from the floor during the final 20 minutes to outscore the Mount 52-44 during the stretch and clinch the win.
Despite the loss, Garlan, Charlton, and freshman Lester Owens (Manalapan, NJ/Manalapan HS) shined as all three allowed the Mount to be competitive throughout the game. Owens had a fantastic overall game, scoring 16 points on 6 for 8 shooting, and adding five assists. Garlan previously scored 19 points in a game on Nov. 18 during the Mount's win over Mitchell College, while Charlton recorded his first double-double in six games.
Overall, the Dolphins shot 45% and forced 14 Old Westbury turnovers, but the Panthers won the game by shooting 50%, hitting eight three-pointers, and owning a 37-28 rebounding edge.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Thursday, Feb. 1 when they travel to Centenary College for a 6:00 p.m. The game will open a doubleheader with the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team against the Cyclones.
