Junior Derek Charlton scored a game-high 26 points on 11 for 16 shooting, and added a team-high seven rebounds but the Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team lost 100-82 to St. Joseph's (LI) on Saturday. MSV hosts Manhattanville on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. |
The story on Saturday was similar to the one the Mount has experienced all season long as the Dolphins played excellent all-around basketball against a very good conference opponent. Mount Saint Vincent grabbed as many rebounds (35) as St. Joseph's and forced more turnovers than they committed, but for the second straight game the Dolphins allowed 12 three-pointers. Combined with a 15 for 28 effort from the free throw line and the Dolphins could not overcome a St. Joseph's offensive effort that included a 61% shooting effort from the floor.
Despite a tough defensive game, the Mount trailed 41-36 with 50 seconds remaining in the first half after a Charlie Britz (Thornwood, NY/Byram Hills HS) lay-up, but St. Joseph's (8-6, 4-3 Skyline Conference) scored the final four points of the half to lead 45-36 at halftime. The 4-0 Golden Eagle run to end the first half turned into a 10-0 run 1:15 into the second half, and the Mount was unable to battle back. However, they didn't exactly give up, either. Mount Saint Vincent trailed by as many as 28 points with 5:34 remaining, but outscored St. Joseph's 23-13 to end the game.
Aside from Charlton's heroics, freshmen Kevin Garlan (Jackson Heights, NY/Archbishop Molloy), Justin Baylosis (East Rockaway, NY/Archbishop Molloy), and P.J. Ratzke (Riverhead, NY/Riverhead HS) each scored 11 points.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Wednesday, Jan. 24 when they host Manhattanville College at 7:00 p.m.
