Women's Swimming finishes fifth at Skyline Conference Championships
Cabahug finishes second in 50-Yard Backstroke; Dolphins place in top-five during seven events; HVWAC Championships next
11/18/2006 - (King's Point, NY) - Freshman Michelle Cabahug (Queens Village, NY/St. Francis Prep) had a tremendous day, earning second place in the 50-Yard Backstroke, and the Dolphins earned top-five finishes in seven events as the Mount Saint Vincent Women's Swimming team finished fifth at the Skyline Conference Swimming & Diving Championships on Saturday at USMMA-Kings Point. Mount Saint Vincent, who finished fifth a year ago, now awaits the Dec. 1 Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) Championships where they have finished second during the last two years.

After struggling through the first three events, Mount Saint Vincent received a spark from freshman Andrea De La Torre (Valley Stream, NY/Mary Louis) when she finished fifth in the 100-Yard Freestyle (1:07.20). Cabahug followed up De La Torre's performance with an incredible 33.12 finish in the 50-Yard Backstroke, an event during which sophomore Jillian Stark (Brooklyn, NY/St. Edmund's Prep) finished fourth (35.59) to earn the Mount eight total points in one event. In total, Mount Saint Vincent finished with 24 points, eight points behind Mount Saint Mary. Stevens won the Women's Swimming Championship with 118 points.

Also enjoying fine performances for the Mount were junior Marie Garcia (Medford, MA/Medford HS), who finished fifth in both the 50-Yard and 100-Yard Butterfly (33.26 & 1:22.71, respectively), and Megan Clark (Silver Spring, MD/St. John's Prep), who earned a fifth place finish in the 50-Yard Freestyle (31.07). The Mount Saint Vincent 200-Yard Freestyle Relay team of Clark, Garcia, De La Torre, and Kim Abbott (Malone, NY/Franklin Academy) also earned a fifth place finish.

A fifth place finish with only five seniors on the roster bodes well for the Mount as next season the Dolphins will compete in a Skyline Conference Championship that will not have top-two finishers Stevens and USMMA-Kings Point. With the field wide open heading into 2007, the Dolphins could very well be in a position to capture their first-ever Skyline Championship.
