Men's Soccer puts forth incredible effort, downed 3-1 by Rams on Senior Day
Hernandez gives Dolphins 1-0 lead on spectacular goal; Mount Saint Vincent now 3-11-1
10/25/2006 - (Riverdale, NY) - The Mount Saint Vincent Men's Soccer team worked hard to prepare for Senior Day and their opponent Farmingdale State. The Rams entered the day's action one of the hottest teams in the Skyline Conference and are in the hunt for a post-season bid, while the Mount entered the game still in search of their groove. 45 minutes into the game, it was clear that Farmingdale was in for one of its toughest tests of the season, and while the Rams ultimately prevailed, 3-1, the Mount Saint Vincent effort proved that the difference between the Dolphins and the rest of the Skyline Conference is not that great.

Sophomore Michael Hernandez (Ridgefield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) netted his third goal of the 2006 season, a gorgeous tally after a pass by senior Chris MacDonald (Farmingdale, NY/Nassau CC) in the 41st minute, and sophomore goalie William Raftery (Bronx, NY/Salesian) enjoyed perhaps his finest half of the season, shutting the Rams down for 45 minutes while making five saves, and the Dolphins led 1-0 at the break ... and they had all of the momentum in the world after outplaying the visiting Rams during the first half.

(L-R) Senior Chris MacDonald, Head Coach Matt Hisler, and senior Alwayne Green celebrate Senior Day after Wednesday's 3-1 loss to Farmingdale State. The Dolphins led 1-0 at halftime after one of their finest efforts of the season during the first half. The Mount gave Skyline Conference powerhouse Farmingdale all they could handle during their final home game of the regular season.

However, Farmingdale's superior depth and speed ultimately prevailed as the Rams opened things up in the second half and scored twice in a six-minute span early in the second stanza to take a 2-1 lead. A goal in the 89th minute gave the Rams a 3-1 cushon, but the game was not an easy one by a long-shot for Farmingdale State (9-7-2, 5-3-1 Skyline Conference) who struggled with the aggressive Dolphin defense throughout the game.

But the story was Mount Saint Vincent seniors MacDonald and Alwayne Green (Brooklyn, NY/Canarsie HS), who suited up for a regular season home game for the final time. Both started and played solid soccer, as they have done throughout their time at the Mount.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 28 when they travel to Vassar College for an 11:00 a.m. game.  The Dolphins will then start their HVMAC Championship Tournament on Sunday, Oct. 29th at Westchester Community College at 1:00 pm vs. Webb Institute.
