Fraino dominant at fifth singles, but Women’s Tennis
knocked off by Sarah Lawrence, 5-1
Junior wins 10-8 in singles play; Burud/Lorenzen drop
nailbiters in singles action
9/29/2006 - (Riverdale, NY) – Junior Megan
Fraino (New City, NY/Clarkstown South HS) scored a
10-8 win at fifth singles, but the win proved to be the
only one of the day for Mount Saint Vincent as the Dolphins
dropped their third straight match, 5-1 to Sarah Lawrence
during a match played at Mount Saint Vincent on Friday
afternoon. With the loss, the Mount falls to 1-4 for the
2006 season.
Fraino was outstanding in the #5 slot as she has proven to be perhaps the most improved player on the team this season. She led throughout the match and was able to put her opponent away despite a valiant effort in the final game. Mount Saint Vincent was actually very much in the match, but two close singles losses proved to spoil the match for the Dolphins. At fourth singles, sophomore Jessica Lorenzen (Pembroke, NH/Pembroke Academy) had an early lead, but lost 10-7 in a match even closer than the score indicated. At sixth singles, junior Kaitlin Burud (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook HS) had an incredible match, but lost 10-9, falling 7-5 in the tiebreaker. The two close losses allowed the Gryphons to clinch the match in singles play, and when darkness forced the cancellation of doubles action, Sarah Lawrence departed a 5-1 winner.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 1 when they travel to the College of Staten Island at noon.
