Cross Country team enjoys successful start to 2006 at Stevens Invitational
Dolphins’ Women’s team finishes third in 6K behind Escobar’s victory; Men’s team finishes fourth in 4K
9/22/2006 - (Hoboken, NY) – Senior Teresa Escobar (Highland Falls, NY/O’Neill HS) earned a first place finish in the six kilometer competition during her first career race, and two other Dolphins earned top-10 finishes as the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Cross Country team earned a third place finish at the Stevens Institute of Technology Invitational on Friday in Hoboken, New Jersey. The Stevens Invitational was the Mount’s first competition of the 2006 season. Not only did the Mount’s Women’s team earn a top-three finish, but the Men’s Cross Country team finished fourth in the four kilometer competition thanks to the efforts of junior Derek Charlton (Yonkers, NY/St. Raymond’s) and sophomore Tim Biolsi (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman), who both earned top-10 finishes.

The story of the day was Escobar, who earned a first place finish in her first career competition. The senior not only won the race, but she finished a full 18 seconds ahead of her closest competitor, turning on an incredible burst of speed during the final ½ mile of the race to earn a relatively easy win. Escobar’s efforts, combined with a ninth place finish by junior Erin Davies (Islip, NY/Islip HS) and a 10th place finish by freshman Erica Costanzo (Barnstead, NH/Tilton School) propelled the Mount to a top-three finish during their first race of the season.

On the Men’s side, Charlton finished eighth with a time of 15:20, while Biolsi broke the top-10 with a 15:59 time.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 1 when they compete at the Lehman College Invitational at Van Cortlandt Park. The race begins at 10:00 a.m.
