Burud nets first career victory, but Women’s Tennis
falls to 1-3 with 8-1 loss to Hawks
Junior wins 8-4 at sixth singles; Nealon/Cotto drop
heartbreaker at third doubles
9/22/2006 - (Riverdale, NY) – Junior Kaitlin
Burud (Red Hook, NY/Red Hook HS) notched her first
collegiate singles victory, an 8-4 triumph at sixth
singles, and the doubles tandem of Kathleen
Nealon (Maspeth, NY/St. Francis Prep) and
Maria Cotto (Harriman, NY/St. Vincent
Ferrer) played the match of the day at third doubles, but
the Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Tennis team lost
their second straight match, 8-1 to Cooper Union on Friday
during a match played at Mount Saint Vincent. With the
loss, the Dolphins fall to 1-3 for the 2006 season and 1-1
in Hudson Valley Women’s Athletic Conference (HVWAC)
play.
Cooper Union (1-0, 1-0 HVWAC) stormed through the first two doubles competitions, winning 8-2 and 8-1, but third singles proved to be a war with Nealon and Cotto battling back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the score, and the teams traded games all the way into a tie-breaker which was won by the Hawks. Up 3-0, Cooper Union rolled through first through fourth singles. Junior Megan Fraino (New City, NY/Clarkstown South HS) lost an 8-4 battle at fifth singles, setting up Burud’s heroics in the final singles slot.
Mount Saint Vincent will now enjoy a one-week lay-off before they host Sarah Lawrence College on Friday, Sept. 29 at 4:30 p.m.
