The Mount controlled play from the opening whistle and had several chances to score early, but poor shooting was the name of the game as the Dolphins missed the goal completely five times in a row during the first half alone. When the Mount did hit the goal, Cooper Union goalie Fabio Alvino Roca was there to make the save as he made seven of his 10 saves during the first 45 minutes. While the Cooper Union defense stood tall, their transition game made its presence felt in the 37th minute when the Hawks scored on a beautiful transition goal. Nicholas VanVoortthuysen found Diego Martinez open in the middle of the field, and Martinez one-timed a shot past Raftery for the game’s only goal.
The second half was all Mount Saint Vincent as the Dolphins enjoyed a 14-4 shots advantage, but only three of the 14 shots were on goal, and Cooper Union held on for the win. Senior Chris Herrera (Fresh Meadows, NY/St. Francis Prep) led the Mount with 10 shots.
Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 23 when they face Hunter College at 3:00 p.m. The game will be played at the Met Oval in Queens, New York.
