Winter, Hernandez score five goals apiece as Men’s Lacrosse closes 2006 with an 11-9 win over Briarcliffe College
Dolphins open 7-3 first half lead, finish 2006 with 2-9 record
5/4/2006 - (New York, NY) – Senior Bryan Winter (Islip, NY/Islip HS) and freshman Mike Hernandez (Ridgefield, NJ/Bergen Catholic) scored five goals apiece, and sophomore goalie Tom Egan (Nanuet, NY/Nanuet HS) made 10 saves as the Mount Saint Vincent Men’s Lacrosse team closed the 2006 season with an 11-9 win over Briarcliffe College on Wednesday. With the win, the Mount ends their second varsity season with a 2-9 record.

Winter scored twice during the first four minutes of play to make it 2-0 for the Mount, and the Dolphins never looked back. The Dolphins led 4-2 after the opening quarter and 7-3 at halftime with Hernandez and Winter scoring six of the Mount’s seven goals. Despite a 41-24 Mount Saint Vincent edge in shots, a 30-17 advantage in ground balls, and a 19-5 face-off edge, the Dolphins allowed Briarcliffe to make it a game as the Seahawks outscored Mount Saint Vincent 2-1 during the third quarter and 4-3 during the final 15 minutes, but thanks to Egan and the Dolphins defense, the lead was never lost.

Also for the Mount, sophomore Jason Reynolds (Centereach, NY/Middle Country HS) registered three assists.

With two years of varsity play under their belts, Mount Saint Vincent can now look forward to the 2007 season when they will compete in a Conference for the first time as the Skyline Conference will sponsor Men’s Lacrosse beginning next year. Mount Saint Vincent joins Stevens, Montclair State, Kean, Farmingdale State, Maritime College, Manhattanville, Centenary, and Richard Stockton College with the winner gaining an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
