Softball wins fourth straight game after doubleheader sweep of Maritime College
Dolphins combine for 32 runs over two games for best doubleheader output of 2006
4/10/2006 - (Throggs Neck, NY) – Monday’s softball doubleheader between Mount Saint Vincent and Maritime College was played on Maritime’s field, but by the end of the day it felt like the Dolphins were very much at home. A Mount Saint Vincent offensive eruption combined with some excellent play on the pitchers mound gave the Dolphins a doubleheader sweep of the Privateers, 12-1 and 20-3. With the sweep, Mount Saint Vincent has won four straight games and is now 6-18 overall and 2-8 in Skyline Conference play.

The Dolphins wasted little time jumping all over Maritime, scoring three times in the opening inning as freshman Jessica Riddle (Billerica, MA/Billerica HS) tripled home two runs and later scored to give the Mount the 3-0 advantage. That was all Riddle would need as she pitched another gem, holding Maritime to one run on two hits while striking out four. Riddle has allowed only one earned run during her last 10 innings of work.

Riddle, Jillian Troncoso (West Haverstraw, NY/West Haverstraw HS), and Jessica Piccoli (Yonkers, NY/Saunders HS) each had three hits and the trio combined for eight RBI’s and eight runs scored as the Mount pounded out 15 hits. Mount Saint Vincent also played a perfect defensive game.

And if any doubt existed about the second game, Mount Saint Vincent quickly put it to an end as the Dolphins opened the night-cap with an 18-run first inning en route to their biggest win of 2006. The opening inning featured the Mount Saint Vincent line-up batting around three times, and Piccoli drove in all five of her runs during the first inning alone. The Mount scored 20 runs despite only nine hits, and 10 different Dolphins scored. The offensive outburst was more than enough for pitcher Krista Roberts (Wilmington, MA/Wilmington HS) to earn her third win of the season with a complete game in which she allowed two earned runs and struck out three.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Tuesday, April 11 when they host Lehman at 4:00 p.m.
