Baseball sweeps Gallaudet during season-opening doubleheader
Dolphins explode for 37 runs during two-game dominance of Bison
3/4/2006 - (Washington, DC) – During a 2005 season in which the Mount Saint Vincent Baseball team enjoyed a stunning level of success for a first year program and finished 15-20, it seemed as if every day was historic for the Dolphins. The 2006 season may be in its infancy, but the trend seems to be continuing for the Mount, as the Dolphins began the year with a bang on Saturday, sweeping Gallaudet University in a doubleheader, 15-1 and 21-1, scoring both run totals for the first time in the history of Mount Saint Vincent baseball. The day was historic in countless ways: It was the Mount’s first-ever 2-0 start to a season, marked the most runs the Dolphins have ever scored during a single game and doubleheader, and also saw the most runs ever scored in a single inning, twice. At 2-0 and with two outstanding performances against a respected Gallaudet program, confidence is high that the Dolphins have what it takes to repeat last season’s success and go even further.

The opener saw a balanced Mount Saint Vincent attack as seven Dolphins combined to drive in 15 Mount Saint Vincent runs as the Mount scored seven runs in the third inning and five more during the fourth inning to break an otherwise tight game wide open. Sophomore Eddie Park (Westbury, NY/Clarke HS) scored three times without benefit of a hit, and Joe Utschig (Pleasantville, NY/Westlake HS) Zach Munroe (Milford, CT/Foran HS), Josh Cuozzo (Westbury, NY/Clarke HS), and Brendan Russo (Westbury, NY/Clarke HS) each drove in two runs during a dominant win for the Mount. The Dolphins also received an outstanding effort on the mound from junior Joe Orgovan (Norwalk, CT/Rockland CC), who pitched three shutout innings, did not allow a hit, and struck out six to earn his first career win.

The nightcap saw much of the same as Mount Saint Vincent scored a school-record 15 runs during the second inning and cruised to victory. Russo went 2 for 2, scored twice, and drove in four runs, while Tanner Munroe (Milford, CT/Foran) and Vinny Prestopino (Bronx, NY/Salesian) each drove in three runs. The Dolphins banged out 16 hits, and only allowed two, as sophomore Jon O’Leary (Bohemia, NY/Connetquot HS) earned his first win of 2006, allowing only one hit over three innings while striking out four.

Mount Saint Vincent has one tune-up remaining before they travel to Fort Pierce, Florida next week for their Spring Break trip. The Dolphins travel to Mercy College on Wednesday at 3:00 p.m.
