Senior Charles Hernandez notched his fifth double-double of the 2005-06 season, but the Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team fell to 9-12 overall and 5-7 in the Skyline Conference with an 86-73 loss to Stevens on Saturday afternoon. The Dolphins return to action on Monday, Feb. 6 when they travel to Medgar Evers for a 7:00 p.m. game.

Mount Saint Vincent opened the game on fire, scoring 13 of the game’s first 14 points, and led 25-10 with 11:24 remaining in the first half. However, Stevens chipped away at the lead, and a buzzer-beating three-pointer by freshman Damien Palantino (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) brought the Ducks within two points at halftime, 42-40.

The second half saw the tide turn completely as Stevens converted 52% of their field goal attempts, outrbounded the Dolphins 27-18, and outscored the Mount 46-31 for the win. Mount Saint Vincent suffered through one of its worst shooting halves of the season during the final 20 minutes, hitting only eight of their 32 shots. Hernandez scored 13 of his 17 points during the second half of play, but no Dolphin scored more than five points during that stretch.

Stevens was led by a balanced attack in which 11 players scored at least two points, and five players scored in double figures. Palantino led the way with 17 points, while Floyd Morris (East Windsor, NJ/Peddie), Waleed Farid (Woodside, NY/Stuyvesant), and Isaac Moore (Phoenix, AZ/Moon Valley HS) each chipped in 10 points. Morris also added seven assists and five rebounds.

For the Dolphins, aside from Hernandez’s heroics, Mooney scored 15 points, while Casey scored 16 and Petruccelli added 12. However, the latter trio combined for only nine points during the second half of play.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Monday, Feb. 6 when they travel to Medgar Evers for a non-conference game at 7:00 p.m. to open a three-game road swing. The Mount enters the stretch very much in the hunt for the final Skyline Conference playoff berth, and their final three games will be against Skyline foes.
