Freshman wins award for the second time in three weeks after averaging nearly 10 points per game
1/30/2006 - (Riverdale, NY) – For the second time in a three-week span, Mount Saint Vincent Women’s Basketball freshman Drew Gomes (Thomaston, CT/Thomaston HS) was named the Hudson Valley Women’s Athletic Conference (HVWAC) Rookie of the Week this week. By winning the award again, Gomes becomes the third straight Dolphin named Rookie of the Week after Ashley Farrow (Ocean, NJ/Ocean Township HS) earned the honor last week.

Gomes earned Rookie of the Week this time around by averaging 9.7 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3 assists, and 2 steals per game during a 2-1 week for the Mount. Her week began with a 12-point, seven-rebound, four-assist effort during a dramatic 65-64 win over Skyline Conference rival Manhattanville College last Tuesday in which the Mount scored the winning basket with less than a minute remaining in the game. Gomes was 4 for 8 from the floor during that game, including a 2 for 2 effort from three-point range. During a win over Saint Elizabeth on Thursday and a loss to Mount Saint Mary on Saturday, Gomes scored 17 total points, and had a career-high four steals against Mount Saint Mary on Saturday.

For the 2005-06 season, Gomes is ranked among the Dolphins’ leaders in several statistical categories. She leads the team with 51 assists, while she is fourth on the team in scoring with 7.8 points per game.

Also earning distinction from the HVWAC was senior Andrea DiNizo (Cortlandt Manor, NY/Masters), who was named Honorable Mention this week after averaging 10.7 points and 4.3 assists per game. DiNizo was named to the Skyline Conference Honor Roll for her efforts as well.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action for the second game of a five-game homestand on Tuesday, Jan. 31 when they host Yeshiva at 8:00 p.m. The Dolphins enter the game 5-12 overall, and will look to improve on their 2-1 start in Hudson Valley Women’s Athletic Conference (HVWAC) play against the Maccabees.
