Young guns ignite as Men’s Basketball rallies past FDU-Florham, 77-71
Britz nets career-high 20 points; Charlton has double-double; Dolphins score game’s final 11 points
1/19/2006 - (Florham, NJ) – When Michael Murphy took the position as Mount Saint Vincent’s Head Men’s Basketball Coach in October, he had to envision that he would have nights like this one on the sidelines. A tight, end-to-end game featuring fast breaks, three pointers, and a dramatic late-game rally to win an incredible game in a hostile gym. Little did Murphy know that the most dramatic victory of his coaching career would come with perhaps the youngest line-up he has ever seen. Using a six-man rotation consisting almost primarily of freshmen and sophomores, the Mount overcame a 34-31 halftime deficit and rallied to score the game’s final 11 points to defeat host FDU-Florham, 77-71. With the win, Mount Saint Vincent improves to 7-11 and now has eight days to prepare for the home stretch of the 2005-06 season. The Dolphins return to action on Friday, Jan. 27 when they host Maritime College in a Skyline Conference game at 7:00 p.m.
Freshman Charlie Britz scored a career-high 20 points and helped lead the Dolphins to an 11-0 run during the final four minutes of play as the Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team rallied to defeat FDU-Florham, 77-71 on Thursday night. With the win, the Mount is now 7-11 and has won four of their last six games.

66 of the Mount’s 77 points were scored by either freshmen or sophomores as the Dolphins broke a two-game losing streak. Freshman Charlie Britz (Armonk, NY/Byram Hills HS) continued his recent string of fine play by scoring a career-high 20 points on 8 for 14 shooting. 14 of Britz’s points came during the second half of play when he shot 6 for 8 from the floor.

Britz’s hot half could not have come at a better time for Mount Saint Vincent as they trailed 65-56 with nine minutes remaining in the game, and 71-66 with only four minutes left. At that point, the Mount defense tightened up and the Dolphins went on an incredible 11-0 run to take the lead for good. After a three-point shot by freshman Tim Biolsi (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) put the Mount ahead 73-71 with 1:37 left in the game, Britz pulled down a defensive rebound and began a fast break that led to an easy lay-up off of an assist by Jarrett Hersche (Bronx, NY/Cardinal Spellman) with 19 seconds remaining to ice the game. Biolsi, making only his second career start, followed up a 17-point performance at Stevens on Monday with a 15-point effort tonight.

Mount Saint Vincent also received a tremendous outing from sophomore Derek Charlton (Yonkers, NY/St. Raymonds), who notched his second career double-double (in as many games), scoring 16 points and adding a team-high 15 rebounds. Charlton earned his first career double-double on Monday night with a 10 point, 10 rebound effort against Stevens.

Mount Saint Vincent achieved the comeback after an incredible rebounding effort during the final 20 minutes, outworking FDU for 30 second-half rebounds compared to FDU’s 18. Five Dolphins had five rebounds or more, including Hersche, who finished the game with 11 points and seven rebounds, while sophomore Brian Chambers (Maspeth, NY/Cathedral Prep) added eight rebounds. The Dolphins also committed a season-low 10 turnovers, and capitalized tremendously on 14 FDU turnovers, earning 25 points off turnovers to FDU’s 9.

With four wins during their last six games, Mount Saint Vincent can now enjoy a brief break before playing their final seven regular season games during a three-week stretch as January turns into February. While the Mount is playing their best basketball of the season, only three of their final seven games will be at home, meaning tonight’s road victory must be a sign of things to come if the Mount is to rally and qualify for the Skyline Conference playoffs.
