Men’s Basketball falls to Blue Knights 115-89
Mooney scores 26 points; Charlton adds career-high 18 points
1/14/2006 - (Riverdale, NY) – It seems like every time the Mount Saint Mary Men’s Basketball travels to Mount Saint Vincent, something wild is bound to happen. Last season’s edition of one of the biggest rivalries in the Skyline Conference was one of the best games of the year conference-wide with Mount Saint Mary escaping with a 115-107 win on Feb. 2, 2005. Nearly a year later, the game was not as close, but it was every bit as wild with the two teams combining for 204 points. Mount Saint Mary used a tremendous shooting first half to build a 68-40 lead after 20 minutes, and cruised to a 115-89 win over Mount Saint Vincent for their eighth straight win.
Sophomore Derek Charlton scored 18 points and added a team-high eight rebounds, but the Mount Saint Vincent Men's Basketball team lost 115-89 to Mount Saint Mary on Saturday. The Dolphins are now 6-10 overall and 3-5 in the Skyline Conference. They travel to Stevens on Monday at 8:00 p.m.

The Dolphins (6-10, 3-5 Skyline Conference) had the hot hand early, opening an 8-2 lead during the first three minutes of play, however, Mount Saint Mary came storming back. The Blue Knights (13-2, 4-1 Skyline Conference) enjoyed runs of 13-2 and 19-5 during the final 10 minutes of play to build the halftime advantage, and never looked back. Mount Saint Mary shot 63% from the floor during the first half while hitting 11 of their 16 three-point shots.

Mount Saint Vincent was able to battle back a bit during the second half, but the Mount Saint Mary back-court tandem of Mike Hoyt (Florida, NY/SS Seward HS) and Julio Ramirez (Queens, NY/Hyde Prep) was too much for the Dolphins to handle. Hoyt, the leading scorer in the Skyline Conference, scored 28 points, while Ramirez scored a game-high 31 points on 12 for 16 shooting. Overall, the Blue Knights shot 50% from the floor, including 16 for 39 from three-point range. They also forced 25 Mount Saint Vincent turnovers, while committing only 16.

For Mount Saint Vincent, senior James Mooney (Bronx, NY/Iona Prep) broke the 20-point mark for the 12th time in 16 games this season. He scored a team-high 26 points on 10 for 21 shooting, and also forced a game-high four steals. Also for the Dolphins, rapidly improving sophomore Derek Charlton (Yonkers, NY/St. Raymond’s) enjoyed a fine game, scoring 18 points and grabbing a team-high eight rebounds. Senior Greg Casey (Mount Vernon, NY/Blessed Sacrament) and sophomore Corey Petrucelli (Stratford, CT/St. Joseph’s) also scored double-digits with Casey scoring 13 points and Petrucelli adding 10.

Mount Saint Vincent returns to action on Monday, Jan. 16 when they travel to Stevens for a crucial Skyline Conference game at 8:00 p.m.
