“Men’s Volleyball has an excellent tradition at Mount Saint Vincent, having produced nationally ranked teams, All-Americans, NECVA Champions, and more importantly, young men who exemplify what it means to be a scholar-athlete and citizen in the Mount Saint Vincent community. I am confident that Tom Callahan is a leader who will work to not only continue this tradition, but to make it even stronger,” Ingram said. “As an educator and coach, Tom has earned acclaim every place he has worked, and I am thrilled he has chosen to undertake the challenge of coaching Men’s Volleyball at the College level.”
Callahan, a Science Teacher and Administrative Intern at Salesian High School, earned a B.S. in Biology from Iona in 1998 and completed his M.S. in Science Education at Lehman College in 2002. He is currently pursuing an M.S. in Educational Administration at Iona.
Since he arrived at Salesian, Callahan has excelled in the coaching ranks, not only leading Salesian to CHSAA Volleyball Championships from 2002-05, but he has also coached five straight CHSAA Bowling Championships as well. Callahan has also served as the Assistant Boys Volleyball Coach for the Hudson Valley Regional team for the Empire State Games. Callahan was also recognized off the court as well by Salesian High School, earning a Department Commendation for four straight years by achieving a 99% passing rate on New York State Regents exams, and also earning Salesian’s Teacher of the Year honors in 2002 and 2005.
Callahan got his first taste of College coaching this past Fall as the Head Women’s Volleyball Coach at Maritime College, and said the experience helped him to realize that coaching Men’s Volleyball at Mount Saint Vincent was the right move for his coaching career.
“Mount Saint Vincent has a Men’s Volleyball tradition that speaks for itself, and the opportunity to come here and hopefully continue the tradition was something that I could not pass up,” Callahan said. “I am thrilled to take over a program that has regularly produced some of the best teams and volleyball players in the country. I think the reputation the Men’s Volleyball program has established, along with the fine academic reputation this College is renowned for will allow us to continue to recruit excellent Student-Athletes from this area and beyond.”
Callahan takes over a program that finished the 2005 season with a 16-10 record that included a trip to the second round of the NECVA Tournament, and a runner-up finish at the ECAC Metro Tournament in April. The Dolphins finished the season ranked #12 in the nation. The 2006 season begins on Jan. 19 when the Mount travels to Hunter College for a 7:00 p.m. match.
